A domestic irrevocable trust can add significant strength to any asset protection plan. Assets transferred into a properly structured irrevocable trust cannot be used to satisfy a judgment.
The downside to an irrevocable trust is that you are usually required to relinquish all control of your property to a third-party trustee. Irrevocable trusts are not appropriate in all situations.
However many of the traditional problems associated with the irrevocable trust can be avoided if the irrevocable trust is used in conjunction with other asset protection techniques and not the sole instrument used for asset protection.
